About me
I'm a freelance director specialising in Theatre for the Under Fives, although I also create work for older children, young people and adults.

Over the past 8 years, I have devised and directed all of the work for the Under Fives for Cardiff-based Theatr Iolo much of which has toured internationally. I have also created work for children for M6, Tam Tam Theatre, Clwyd Theatr Cymru, Welsh National Opera and I will be working for Theatre Hullabaloo in the autumn on an adaptation of the children's book, The Night Pirates.

I also teach and direct at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and the University of Glamorgan.

Some thoughts re creating work for children and creating work for adults sparked off by discussion at the launch

There was much fascinating talk at yesterday's The Future Playground Launch about the way in which people's practice in creating work for adults differs from/or is similar to their practice in creating work for children. I'm in a slightly different position to most of the people who spoke yesterday in that, while I PRIMARILY create work for children, I also direct plays for adults and I teach students who are studying on courses which have nothing specifically to do with theatre for children -… Continue

Congratulations on the launch

Congratulations to everyone involved on yesterday's launch. It was great to see old friends and colleagues and to meet a host of interesting people for the first time.

Looking forward to reading more of the small group discussions here.

Thanks for inviting me!

I am with you in spirit!

I'm so sorry that I haven't yet got round to posting anything more substantial - I've got a show for teenagers opening tomorrow so, as you can imagine, I've been up to my eyes. Once the show opens I will be turning my attention back to an opera for 4-5 year olds that I have written and am directing for Welsh National Opera - and will also have some time to really engage with the fascinating discussions that are already starting to happen here in The Future Playground.

MANIFESTOS (or, Tell Us What You Really Think)

There's a venerable tradition of artists' manifestos, which always seem to pop up especially at times of great cultural and political change (post WW1 dadaists; them 60s experimenters...) so, given that we are living through times of extraordinary change right now, I thought I'd start a thread for MANIFESTOS RELATING TO MAKING ART FOR CHILDREN.Don't have one?  Nor did I until 24 hours ago, then I decided I'd write one.So get going, and it'd be grand to see them here...See More

On encouraging young audiences (or their parents) to take risks

http://www.itstheforest.comWhy should parents bring their children to see something like my company's dance piece 'The Forest'?When it’s half term and I scan the pages of the ‘what’s on for children’ sections of magazines I want to know that the experiences I choose for my children will be, to be honest, worth the effort, that they will enjoy it, that they will be enriched in some way, in any way, by what they’ve seen.I want to take them…See More
