About me
I am the Artistic Director of Islington Community Theatre and a freelance director with a particular interest in working with people who've never been involved in theatre projects before.

Islington Community Theatre

Islington Community Theatre is an award-winning theatre company that makes innovative, collaborative theatre with local people in Islington, North London.

We bring together people from very different backgrounds to create brave, inventive projects and performances, made in partnership with professional theatre directors, actors, designers and technicians. We choose not to have a permanent performance space, which means we can work flexibly across Islington and reach a wide range of people and places.

One of our key projects is Islington Youth Theatre, a nationally acclaimed company of over 100 young people aged 10-22, drawn almost entirely from local schools and youth groups.

We are committed to changing the face of theatre in the UK by giving local young people and emerging theatre-makers long-term and individually focussed support and training from some of the best theatre professionals around.

MANIFESTOS (or, Tell Us What You Really Think)

There's a venerable tradition of artists' manifestos, which always seem to pop up especially at times of great cultural and political change (post WW1 dadaists; them 60s experimenters...) so, given that we are living through times of extraordinary change right now, I thought I'd start a thread for MANIFESTOS RELATING TO MAKING ART FOR CHILDREN.Don't have one?  Nor did I until 24 hours ago, then I decided I'd write one.So get going, and it'd be grand to see them here...See More

On encouraging young audiences (or their parents) to take risks

http://www.itstheforest.comWhy should parents bring their children to see something like my company's dance piece 'The Forest'?When it’s half term and I scan the pages of the ‘what’s on for children’ sections of magazines I want to know that the experiences I choose for my children will be, to be honest, worth the effort, that they will enjoy it, that they will be enriched in some way, in any way, by what they’ve seen.I want to take them…See More
