We are wondering about applying for a small fund to support a peer group of practitioners interested in Early Years theatre in Scotland to meet, skill share and create training events/ discussions/ networking etc. So I just wanted to ask if there are any of you out there who get a lot out of being part of a group like that?

I was part of a group of peers to gather regularly in the past (in a slightly more formal way than just going to the pub) but it was hard to get the balance right between being too much commitment for busy people, and being so casual that we would loose the thread. Maybe it always needs to be held together by one or two people?

It does sound like a good idea- but I would love to hear about some examples of artist led initiatives that have held together? It's a small country and it feels like we are already all connected through Imaginate and Starcatchers, but are we missing something which we could provide for ourselves?

Great idea Hazel. I am based in Ireland so can't take part, but would like to hear how this initiative develops. Please keep me posted.

All the best,

Helene

Hi Helene,

I've just been prompted to reply, we actually got the support to go ahead and it's early days but we have started meeting and there are now 21 members of 'Patter.' We are really excited about how it will develop, particularly about our Christmas party (one of the things we miss out on being freelancers.) But I think it will also inevitably impact our work, having this time for reflection and peer to peer support. We are not sure how yet, but it will be fun to find out, and there is no hurry either- the group will be around for at least another 2 years!

Best,

Hazel

Hi Hazel,

I just noticed your post about peer to peer learning. I currently run a peer group for artist (all disciplines) in Edinburgh, and would be keen to talk to you - not only about the running of such a thing (getting that balance as you said is very important) but also about whether the group has any room for more members. I am currently trying to develop work for young audiences but a little more structure, or a chance to chat to people would be great.

Thanks,

Catherine

Hi Catherine,

That's great- it's an open Network so at the moment anyone can join. The best thing is to email your details to patternetwork@gmail.com and we need to try and add you on facebook- but I looked it up and there are lots of Catherine Stewarts- I'm not sure which one you are?

Hazel

MANIFESTOS (or, Tell Us What You Really Think)

There's a venerable tradition of artists' manifestos, which always seem to pop up especially at times of great cultural and political change (post WW1 dadaists; them 60s experimenters...) so, given that we are living through times of extraordinary change right now, I thought I'd start a thread for MANIFESTOS RELATING TO MAKING ART FOR CHILDREN.Don't have one?  Nor did I until 24 hours ago, then I decided I'd write one.So get going, and it'd be grand to see them here...See More

On encouraging young audiences (or their parents) to take risks

http://www.itstheforest.comWhy should parents bring their children to see something like my company's dance piece 'The Forest'?When it’s half term and I scan the pages of the ‘what’s on for children’ sections of magazines I want to know that the experiences I choose for my children will be, to be honest, worth the effort, that they will enjoy it, that they will be enriched in some way, in any way, by what they’ve seen.I want to take them…See More
