Event Description

Using creative approaches to support children’s learning and development

For early years foundation stage teachers and practitioners, artists, heads of centres, cultural managers, local authority advisors, early years professionals, arts or cultural organisations.

The aims of this Earlyarts Professional Development Day are to help early years professionals understand how working creatively with young children promotes the dispositions and attitudes needed for lifelong learning.  To support home/setting links through the use of no cost resources in developing learning.

The day will include a tour of the 'outstanding' St Edmunds Nursery School and Children's Centre, and two practical workshops:

Workshop 1Sustained learning using recycled materials with Lou Sumray. Lou is a Community Artist who has a wealth of experience working with early years in wide range of learning settings. This workshop will focus on developing the use of open-ended and recycled resources to promote sustained learning. Lou will talk about her current work with 3 and 4 year olds and the impact this has had on their learning. There will be the opportunity for participants to use a range of resources and explore how this way of working could be applied to their own context.

Workshop 2: Engaging parents through songs and rhymes with Judith Brindle. Judith has worked for many years as a teacher in Bradford Schools including work with students with learning difficulties. She now works as a freelance teacher using songs and rhymes to develop children’s musicality.  Judith’s work has had a real impact on St Edmunds Nursery School & Children’s Centre not only through developing the skills of our own staff but also in supporting parents’ interactions with their children in the home environment. Judith will talk about how she works in our setting with parents and children from birth to 5. The workshop will provide participants with opportunities to develop a repertoire of songs and rhymes to use in their own context.

MANIFESTOS (or, Tell Us What You Really Think)

There's a venerable tradition of artists' manifestos, which always seem to pop up especially at times of great cultural and political change (post WW1 dadaists; them 60s experimenters...) so, given that we are living through times of extraordinary change right now, I thought I'd start a thread for MANIFESTOS RELATING TO MAKING ART FOR CHILDREN.Don't have one?  Nor did I until 24 hours ago, then I decided I'd write one.So get going, and it'd be grand to see them here...See More

On encouraging young audiences (or their parents) to take risks

http://www.itstheforest.comWhy should parents bring their children to see something like my company's dance piece 'The Forest'?When it’s half term and I scan the pages of the ‘what’s on for children’ sections of magazines I want to know that the experiences I choose for my children will be, to be honest, worth the effort, that they will enjoy it, that they will be enriched in some way, in any way, by what they’ve seen.I want to take them…See More
