About the Future Playground

The Future Playground is a community of people who are creating the future of art for children. It's a place for debate, for exchanging ideas, sharing knowledge, asking questions, and spreading information.

It's a place where we can come together and talk about how to ensure that art for children - whether in theatre, dance, visual art, music, writing or any other form - can always be as brilliant, challenging, rigorous and beautiful as art for anyone else.

Uluzuzulalia - a vivacious voice playground

Well, I've been wanting to keep the FP team and members abreast of our experiment in creating interactive, installed extended voice work for children, Uluzuzulalia. We've just emerged from a few weeks of R & D and had some really useful feedback on the work. It is an attempt to put my manifesto - both video and written - into action in the 'work-for-children' paradigm. If you would like to have a look at the end result of the work, check out our just-edited trailer at…

On Making Art for Children: One Minute Video Manifestos

Calling all artists/producers/programmers! We want your One Minute Video Manifesto on Making Art for Children. Have a look at the 3 Video Manifestos posted on the videos page, and following the brief set out below film your own and upload it there. The Future Playground 2012 - "What We Artists Want From Producers"

Notes from the discussion in the artists/makers group - these are the views of the group, not of Fevered Sleep.

"What We Want From Producers & Programmers & Venues"

More opportunities to see more work, and more international work.

Someone who can make it happen, and who doesn't start by identifying the problems.

Hard interrogation at every opportunity.

Partners, simply.  And for potential partners to think about working more…

The Future Playground 2012 - What We Producers Want From Artists

We want Artist's to:

Be as ambitious with your work for children as you are with your adult work

Have the ability to put ego aside and be open to learning and collaboration during the creation process

Be open to changing the structure of touring work e.g. to offer workshops and residencies ahead of tour weeks

Create more work for the outdoors

Think BIG and create work for the large scale and main stages

Be open to debate image and title of work with…

What is it family audiences want?

I'm doing a little research into what it is that makes a parent book to see a mid scale family show. I'm interested to know what would hook them, why they would take the risk - and many do see going…Continue

Touring to Schools? I'm thinking about future audiences now...

So here are some thoughts I have been having about why we should rethink touring into schools, there is a 'how' to match this 'why', but it's early days. I would love to talk to more people about…Continue

    Open Sesame project is "Sorted?"

'Sorted?' is a participatory performance event for families with under 5's that we have devised as part of the Open Sesame project and are now taking it out to all the nurseries that have been involved in the project (13 in Sussex and Surrey). We wanted to be able to quickly and easily transform the community centres and church halls that we are going to, and to give parents lots of ideas from the show that they could easily do…See More
